Company partner fined for asbestos breaches

The partner of a development firm has been fined after failing to carry out an asbestos assessment.
Allan Smith from ATS Developments acted as principal contractor to demolish a building in Dover when the health and safety breaches occurred in 2010.
A member of the public contacted the Health and Safety Executive believing the site was insecure.
An inspector from the agency found the building partially demolished and the site unfenced, despite a public footpath running across the land.
No asbestos survey had been carried out prior to demolition, the HSE investigation also revealed.
Allan Smith, from Bowling Green Lane, Deal, Kent, pleaded guilty to breaching asbestos regulations and failing to secure the site properly.
He was fined £7,000, but failing to carry out thorough checks on older buildings could ultimately lead to workers and members of the public seeking help from an asbestosis lawyer.
"Before anyone undertakes any demolition works they must consider whether asbestos is present and take precautionary steps such as carrying out an asbestos survey," said HSE inspector Caroline Penwill.
