MoD accused of 'stunning betrayal' of British industry

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been accused of a "stunning betrayal" of British manufacturing after setting out reforms to armed forces procurement in a new white paper.
Unite, which provides trade union support to many in the manufacturing sector, said the plans to open up defence and security contracts to greater competition will harm domestic firms.
The defence white paper sets out the way in which the MoD will approach the buying of equipment and weapons for the armed forces over the next ten years.
In order to make the £150 billion procurement of goods over that period more efficient, the government has indicated that it will no longer give preference to UK firms ahead of foreign suppliers when awarding contracts.
Unite national officer Ian Waddell said:"This is yet another stunning betrayal of British manufacturing."
He said the government had "learnt nothing" from the Bombardier case, when a lucrative contract was awarded overseas.
"The defence industry provides highly skilled jobs and is hugely important to the economy. The government is doing next to nothing to support UK manufacturing," Mr Waddell argued.
