Two firms fined over Drax power plant injury

Two companies have been fined after a worker at a North Yorkshire power station was injured in an accident at work.
A 19-year-old worker suffered a broken foot when a 13kg weight fell nearly four metres from an overhead crane.
He and a colleague were operating a 21-tonne crane when they needed it to change direction.
They were using a steel pole to pull down on a chain that operated the steering mechanism when the counter-balance weight and chain detached from the crane and came crashing down.
Drax Power Ltd and Konecranes UK Ltd, a permanent on-site contractor responsible for maintaining all the cranes and hoists, were prosecuted following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
The two firms were each fined £13,000 for failing to keep the crane in good working order.
Firms need to ensure they stay on top of maintenance if they are to avoid legal action from an accident at work solicitor.
HSE Inspector Andy Denison explains: "It is not acceptable to turn a blind eye to the on-going maintenance and repair of work equipment.
He adds: "Companies cannot simply contract out their responsibilities and then let the contractor get on with it without checking the work is being done."
