Mediation services could be the healthy alternative during divorce

The strain of divorce can certainly take its toll on couples going through the courts, which is one good reason to consider mediation services.
New research, moreover, suggests the stress of divorce can have long-term health consequences for people.
Younger people in particular are hard hit by divorce and cope less well with the change, according to a study from Hui Liu, an assistant professor of sociology at Michigan State University.
The study published in the journal Social Science & Medicine found people who were divorced between the ages of 35 and 41 reported more health problems compared to those who got divorced in their late 40s or who remained married.
"I would have expected divorce to carry less stress for the younger generation, since divorce is more prevalent for them," said a surprised Liu.
One way of potentially reducing the amount of stress involved with separation is to go through mediation, which the Ministry of Justice says is "a quicker, cheaper and more amicable alternative to court".
Grant Cameron, family law solicitor and mediator at Lamport Bassitt, comments: "Mediation, irrespective of age, has a number of significant benefits for the couple. It is shown that mediation reduces tension and hostility and helps the couple to keep the channels of communication open.
"It also can benefit the children of the family by showing them that their parents are working together to resolve issues. The knock-on effect results in a more amicable and dignified approach in dealing with relationship disputes."
