Council of Europe: Euthanasia should always be prohibited

Euthanasia should always be banned, the Council of Europe has said in a declaration that could have huge implications for people setting out their wishes in a Lasting or Enduring Power of Attorney document.
These "living wills" allow people to stipulate how they should be cared for and how their finances should be managed in the event of their becoming mentally incapacitated.
Potentially affecting human rights laws in its 47 member countries, the Council said assisted suicide "must always be prohibited".
The condemnation of euthanasia was included in a non-binding resolution entitled Protecting Human Rights and Dignity by Taking Into Account Previously Expressed Wishes of Patients.
It will come as a significant setback for campaigners who want to see the UK follow Holland, Belgium and Switzerland in allowing doctors to help end the lives of their patients.
The government explains the current rules on "advanced decisions". It says: "If you're concerned about having a lack of capacity in the future, you can make a statement explaining medical treatments you would not want at that future time."
A Lasting Power of Attorney must be made if a person wants to choose someone to make decisions about their treatment.
