NHS trust faces legal action over mileage rates

An NHS trust could face legal action over plans to slash the amount it pays staff whenever they use their vehicle for work, a union has warned.
Unite, which provides trade union support to thousands of health workers, says Northumbria NHS Foundation Trust's proposals will make staff significantly worse off.
From April 1st, employees of the trust will be paid 24p a mile instead of the current 47p when they use their own vehicle for work purposes.
The union said the move will particularly affect health visitors, midwives, community nursery nurses, district nurses and speech and language therapists.
Unite regional officer Martin Wright said the plans are "unacceptable", citing the high cost of fuel and the rural nature of Northumberland as two factors.
"This is being imposed unilaterally," he added.
"They are offering the lease car option for staff, instead of paying the proper private mileage rate, but that may not be suitable or financially feasible for everyone."
If the trust presses ahead with the changes, Mr Wright continued, it could face a legal challenge for unlawful deduction of wages at an employment tribunal.
