Unite calls for NHS racism inquiry

A leading union is calling for an inquiry into alleged racism at Central Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.
Unite, which provides trade union support to 1.5 million workers, has written to health secretary Andrew Lansley demanding an investigation.
It follows the case of Elliot Browne, a divisional director at the trust who received nearly £1 million after contacting an employment discrimination claim solicitor and taking unfair dismissal compensation claim advice.
The 55-year-old recently was awarded £933,115 after suffering racial discrimination and unfair dismissal at trust.
In the letter to the health secretary, Unite head of health Rachael Maskell talked of her "deep concern about the levels of direct and indirect race discrimination many employees ... are experiencing in the NHS".
"The government must act swiftly to explore how far certain ingrained behaviours and practices are embedded in NHS management cultures, and to respond accordingly," she said.
According to Unite, the black Caribbean population in central Manchester stands at 6.9 per cent, yet only represents 0.7 per cent of the trust's workforce.
