Third of bosses to fire temporary workers before 12 weeks

One-third of bosses plan to get rid of temporary staff before their 12-week trial period is up, a new survey suggests.
The findings follow the implement of Agency Worker Regulations (AWR), which many firms have sought advice on from an employment contract law service.
Enacted on October 1st last year, this legislation means that once a temporary or contract worker is in a role for 12 weeks, they are entitled to many of the same rights as permanent staff.
However, the new survey from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (Apsco) suggests employers are finding their way around the law.
With the first 12-week period since the beginning of October coming to an end at the end of December, the organisation notes that many temporary workers could find themselves out of work in January.
Ann Swain, chief executive at APSCo, commented: "The AWR is clearly having an impact, even at the professional end of the market.
"Contractors and temps in areas such as IT or banking usually earn more than permanent staff, but this is not true for all roles, particularly at the entry level, where the AWR may lead to increased costs."
