Barriers to private rental sector to be focus of govt review

Barriers faced by landlords attempting to expand their portfolio, as well as those facing new entrants to the market, are set to be examined in a government commissioned review. Sir Adrian Montague will author the report, which will examine how best to encourage investment in rental properties, forming part of housing minister Grant Shapps' ongoing response to last month's Housing Strategy publication. Strong growth and improved standards over the last few years have been welcomed by Mr Shapps, who also concedes that more needs to be done to address rising rental prices across the country. "Over three million households live in privately rented homes, so its vital that we take steps to ensure the sector's continuing growth and affordability," he explained. "Sir Adrian brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role of the private sector in boosting infrastructure investment and of housing policy, making him an excellent choice to lead the review." Responding to the Housing Strategy, the Institute for Public Policy Research criticised the government, claiming that the only way to address the UK's chronic housing problems is to build new homes.
