Married population falls as cohabitation rates rise

More people are cohabiting with their partner as a the number of married couples continues to decline. New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal an estimated one in six people are cohabiting as husbands and wives now make up less than half of the population. "One of the main reasons for the decrease in the married population and the increase in the single population is the growth of cohabitation by unmarried couples," the report said. Couples also appear to be taking advice on family law, mediation and relationships later in life, with the age at which the highest proportion of the population is divorced rising to 53, up from 40 in 1991. Recent figures released by the ONS revealed the over-60 divorce rate has shot up in recent years, with more than 11,500 people in this age bracket granted a divorce in 2009, up four per cent in just two years.
