Survey: 1 in 3 basement construction sites failing on safety

Workers operating at basement construction sites could be among those most likely to seek help from an accident at work solicitor, a new survey suggests. One in three such sites showed "serious" safety failings during a series of visits by inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Inspectors visited 109 sites in four London boroughs, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster and Wandsworth, on November 15th and 16th. Enforcement action was taken at 40 sites (37 per cent), with a total of 76 notices served. At four projects, the HSE said conditions were so dangerous that inspectors were forced to close them down. Construction is already among the most dangerous industries in the UK. Just five per cent of all UK employees work in construction, but the industry accounts for nine per cent of reported major injuries and 27 per cent of fatalities. HSE principal inspector Andrew Beal said: "Safety standards in many basement projects are well short of acceptable, as our inspection initiative shows. Companies constructing basements must not be complacent about the risks." Posted by Paul Stevens
