Unite members at Unilever vote for strikes

Members of Unite working at Unilever have voted to strike over the company's plans to scrap its final salary pension scheme. Unite, which provides trade union support for around 1.5 million employees in the UK, says there was "overwhelming" support for industrial action and that walkouts at the firm's 12 sites are "likely". It is in protest at Unilever's decision to abolish its final salary pension scheme, which the union says will see the retirement income of thousands of staff slashed by up to 40 per cent. Jennie Formby, Unite national officer, said: "Our members have spoken and, while the decision to strike was not an easy one, the message is clear: they will not roll over and accept this attack on their pension scheme." She called on the company to do the "decent thing" and negotiate with employee representatives for a solution to the dispute. It comes as the government announces that the final implementation of pensions auto-enrolment will be delayed for small businesses by a year. Commenting on the decision, the TUC described it as a "grave disappointment". Posted by Alex McLean
