HSE welcomes Lofstedt review

A review into laws affecting employees seeking advice from an accident at work solicitor has been welcomed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The government has accepted the recommendations of the Lofstedt Review into health and safety in the workplace, which seeks to reduce the burden on businesses. HSE chair Judith Hackitt says the report will reduce rates of work-related ill-health, injury and death. She argued that measures to streamline existing regulations, focus enforcement on higher risk businesses, clarify requirements and rebalance the civil litigation and dispute resolution system are all "practical, positive steps". "We welcome these reforms because they are good for workers and employers but also for the significant contribution they will make to restoring the rightful reputation of real health and safety," Ms Hackitt added. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents also welcomed the findings of the Lofstedt report, commissioned by employment minister Chris Grayling in March. It said the review confirms that the present legal structure for health and safety is "broadly fit for purpose". Posted by Paul Stevens
