Three firms fined after Arsenal stadium accident

Three construction companies have been fined after a worker building Arsenal's Ashburton Grove stadium was severely injured. Michael O'Donovan, 41, needed to have his right leg amputated after he was struck by a dumper truck at the site in 2005. Principal contractor Sir Robert McAlpine Limited and sub-contractors McNicholas Plc, now Skanska Utilities Ltd, and Maylim Limited were all prosecuted over the incident and fined a total of £54,000. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) showed all three companies had failed to ensure vehicles and pedestrians were properly segregated on site. HSE inspector Loraine Charles commented: "Traffic needs to be managed effectively on all construction sites. Had proper controls been in place, this appalling incident would never have happened." Construction workers are more likely to seek help from an accident at work solicitor than those in other industries. Figures from the HSE show that while just five per cent of all UK employees work in construction, the industry accounts for nine per cent of reported major injuries and 27 per cent of fatalities.
