Unite slams Clegg on 'short-term' youth employment plan

Unite, which provides trade union support to 1.5 million workers, has branded new government plans to get more young people in work as a "short-term figure-massaging exercise".
The union says the proposals to offer subsidies to companies employing 18 to 24-year-olds will do little to tackle the escalating problem of youth unemployment.
Starting next April, the Youth Contract will provide at least 410,000 new work places for young people.
Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke said: "It will create a merry-go-round of young people going into low-paid jobs, with no guaranteed future."
He added: "This will not tackle the youth unemployment dilemma; it is simply cosmetic arrangement sticking plaster on an open wound."
Mr Burke said the union wants to see a "proper system" for firms to take on young people as skilled apprentices.
The number of 16 to 24-year-olds out of work hit 1.02 million in September, a record high.
