Firm fined £15,000 for accident at work

An animal feed firm has been fined £15,000 after a supervisor was injured in an incident highlighting the role of an accident at work solicitor.

The man, who did not want to be named, suffered crush injuries to his right hand and two severed fingers when he attempted to clean an air slide under a large animal feed mixing machine.

Paul Newton, an inspector at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which led the prosecution, said A.One Feed Supplements, based in North Yorkshire, had failed to ensure that measures were in place to prevent the movement of dangerous parts of the machine before any worker got too close.

"The supervisor, despite having some two months' training at the firm, was not adequately trained in how to clean the air slide or how to safely isolate the machine," he explained.

A.One Feed did not have adequate information or instructions available to employees, he added.

Statistics from the HSE reveal there were 27 people killed in the manufacturing sector in Britain during 2010/11, while just over 3,800 major injuries were recorded.
