Asbestos concerns close school

An infant school has temporarily closed after suspected small quantities of asbestos were discovered.
Belvedere Infant School in London will be shut until December 1st as a precaution while the building is refurbished to replace any materials that contain substance.
Headteacher Linda Mulley said: "This is an unexpected period of disruption for our children and I appreciate the patience that children, parents and carers have shown while we are putting final arrangements in place."
Bexley Council is working to ensure the children have somewhere else to go while the school is closed.
It comes after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that almost one-fifth (17 per cent) of schools outside of local authority control have asbestos management procedures that are below acceptable standards.
Following inspections at 164 independent, voluntary-aided and foundation schools and academies between November 2010 and June 2011, the HSE served notices on 28 schools requiring them to improve arrangements for managing asbestos.
Exposure to the material can lead to illness and people seeking advice from an asbestosis lawyer, while 4,000 are estimated to die each year from being in contact with asbestos.
