Southampton council workers reject pay cut proposal

Workers at Southampton City Council have rejected the local authority's settlement proposals over pay cuts, according to Unite, which offers trade union support to many of the affected employees.

Some 2,4000 members of Unite, Unison and UCATT voted against the plans in a secret postal ballot.

The council proposes cutting pay by between 3.2 per cent and five per cent for those earning above £22,000, followed by a three-year salary freeze for all workers.

It also comes after the Conservative-run council voted to privatise the majority of its services, which would see it become a primarily commission body by 2015.

Unite convener Mark Wood commented: "The council has reneged on the contractual arrangement with its employees and we are determined to continue the campaign for fairness.

"They have placed clearly unacceptable pre-conditions on this proposal, resulting in this resounding rejection."

Southampton City Council's plans to dismiss workers and re-engage on inferior contracts sparked a wave of walkouts over the summer.
