Unite slams Villiers over Bombardier statement

Transport minister Theresa Villiers has been strongly criticised by a leading trade union for her handling of a meeting on the future of workers at Bombardier.
Unite, which offers trade union support to 1.5 million workers in the UK, says the employees of the Derby-based firm were expecting to hear some good news from a meeting between the minister and union representatives.
However, it said she gave no assurances about their future and refused to change policy on the Thameslink contract.
The award of the contract to German firm Siemens prompted an outcry from unions and spurred ministers to demand a re-examination of European Union public procurement rules.
Unite national secretary Julia Long claimed the meeting with Ms Villiers was "extremely frustrating".
She said the government should rethink the Thameslink contract in light of a new report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) warning of more job losses in the UK.
"On the day the CIPD predicted a slow and painful contraction in the economy, here we have the government with the power to support manufacturing jobs in Derby doing absolutely nothing. It is an outrage," Ms Long added.
