MP targets injuries caused by cyclists

An MP is calling for a new law to be introduced that would create a offence of causing death or serious injury through dangerous or reckless cycling. While people hurt by cyclists can seek help from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton, Conservative Andrea Leadsom wants to make it a criminal offence. Speaking on the BBC Radio 4 Law In Action podcast, she argued that there is a clear problem with cyclists causing injuries to children, elderly people and other pedestrians. She suggested that while motorists are constantly targeted by campaigns promoting safety, cyclists can get away with dangerous behaviour. "I think there is a bit of a cultural tolerance towards cyclists jumping across a zebra crossing as you are walking across it as a pedestrian," Ms Leadsom said.
"There isn't any accountability. They don't have a number plate and there isn't any comeback."
She suggested that the 19th century law on "furious and wanton driving", which was related to horses and carriages and carries a prison sentence of up to two years, should be updated to target cyclists.
