Unite warns Balfour Beatty strike action looms

Workers at Balfour Beatty could go on strike with trade union support after the firm imposed contractual changes that will see the pay of thousands of workers cut by a third. Seven leading construction companies, including Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, informed Unite in May of its intention to withdraw from five long-standing agreements and impose new semi-skilled grades with wage cuts. Unite is balloting Balfour Beatty first as it believes the firm is the "ring-leader" of the break-away employers. Five firms out of the seven have threatened to sack workers who refuse to sign the new and inferior contracts by December 7th. Len McCluskey, Unite general secretary, said: "Balfour Beatty has been warned that its greed will bring mayhem to an industry struggling to steer a path through the recession, but refuse to listen." He suggested that the threat of strike action may bring the firm "back to its senses" and recommence negotiations. Meanwhile, 2,500 workers at Ford could go on strike after Unite walked out of talks with the car firm over pensions. Posted by Georgina Price
