Unite calls on Acas to intervene in Thomas Cook dispute

Unite is calling on Acas to provide mediation services in the dispute between Thomas Cook and around 500 cabin crew who the tour operator wants to make redundant. Talks were held in Manchester yesterday (November 9th) between Unite, which offers trade union support to the workers, and the company in the dispute over the redundancy terms. Unite regional officer Mick Whitley said: "Following the talks yesterday Unite has asked for this dispute to go to Acas. "We are waiting to hear from Thomas Cook if it wishes to go down the Acas route, which is allowed for in the agreement Unite has with the company." The union demands minimum redundancy terms of three weeks per year, plus a lump sum payment of £5,000. Unite represents about 1,150 of the 1,800-strong cabin crew workforce. It comes as the union warns Balfour Beatty that strike action could be the result of planned changes to workers' contracts. Posted by Alex McLean
