Unite warns over Southampton City Council 'privatisation' blueprint

A leading union has issued a stark warning over plans put forward by Southampton City Council for the "whole-scale privatisation" of the local authority's services. Unite, which has provided trade union support to the council's workers in their long-running battle over contractual changes, is worried that the council will become primarily a commissioning body by 2015. Unite regional officer Ian Woodland said: "If this plan goes ahead many of the council's services will be done by private companies by 2015. "Southampton's citizens need to wake-up to what is being planned without the necessary public consultation." He said this would mean poorer quality services and the loss of many jobs as private firms seek to cut costs. Such a move would also mean thousands of council employees could become subject to TUPE Regulation. The council's Change Programme, which will be discussed by the full council on Wednesday November 16th, sets out ways in which gross costs can be reduced by 25 per cent over the next three years.
