Roofers sentenced after workplace injury

Two roofers have been fined and received suspended sentences after an office worker was hurt in the type of incident that can lead to people seeking advice from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton. Kathleen Philipson of Allestree, Derby, was injured when a 37kg roll of roofing felt fell through a roof light and hit her on the shoulder. She was off work for two weeks with injuries to her head, shoulder and left arm. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that contractor Jason Lunt had allowed work to start on the flat roof before adequate protection was installed to stop such an incident. He and self-employed roofer Gregory Wright, who was contracted to carry out the work, each pleaded guilty to breaking health and safety regulations. HSE inspector Lee Greatorex said: "Mrs Philipson was extremely lucky not to have suffered more severe injuries. "This was a frightening experience for her, but it could have been easily prevented had greater care been taken." Jason Lunt, 41, of Valley Road, Bloxwich and Gregory Wright, 41, of Tewkesbury Road, Bloxwich both received sentences of 18 weeks, suspended for 12 months on the condition that they complete 280 hours of community service.
