Waste firm prosecuted for accident at work

A firm that treats industrial waste has been fined £20,000 after a worker was hurt in the kind of incident that can lead to employees seeking advice from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton. Collier Industrial Waste Ltd was prosecuted after a 60-year-old worker was struck by a 35-tonne vehicle. He suffered severe injuries including damage to internal organs and multiple broken bones. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found the company did not have sufficient systems in place to protect workers from reversing vehicles on the site. HSE inspector Daniel Longdon said the accident was "entirely preventable" and could easily have been fatal. "There were several systems the company could have introduced to make sure workers were not put at risk by moving vehicles. Most of these would have been simple and inexpensive," he added. New figures from the HSE reveal that 26.4 million working days were lost in 2010/11 because of work-related illness and workplace injury. Posted by Paul Stevens
