Law Society backs family justice reforms

Sweeping reforms to family law, mediation and relationships set out in a new independent report have been welcomed by the Law Society.

It said it backs the recommendations of the Norgrove Family Justice Review, in particular hailing the proposals to speed up the system for the benefit of children.

The overall aims of the report "should attract wide ranging support", said Law Society chief executive Desmond Hudson. "We share its recognition of the need for radical and lasting change within family justice."

Among the recommendations are proposals to impose a six-month time limit in care cases and for mediation services to be more widely deployed to reduce the burden on the courts.

"Cases are taking too long, causing harm to children and families," Mr Hudson said of the current system.

He went on the stress that cuts to the legal aid budget will further clog up the family justice system as more people represent themselves in court.

The Norgrove review places the interest of children at the centre, suggesting new measures to protect their interests.

"Children are at the heart of family justice and their welfare should be paramount," noted Mr Hudson.
