Winter brings increased workplace accident risk

Workers could be more likely to contact a personal injury lawyer in Southampton as winter means slips are more likely to occur. Figures from the Institution of Occupational Safety show a third of all major injuries are due to slips and trips, with 20 per cent resulting in absence of more than three days. Phil Bates, senior policy and technical adviser at the organisation, says employers need to be particularly aware of the dangers at this time of year. "Winter weather brings extra hazards, such as cold temperatures, icy conditions and high winds - which employers and employees need to take into account," he argues. Particular areas to consider include slips and trips, travel to work, manual handling, carbon monoxide emissions from heating appliances and "thermal hazards" from cold environments, he explains. He advises businesses to take "sensible precautions" to mitigate risks, such as allowing staff extra time to get to work. Posted by Paul Stevens
