Mediation services 'quicker, cheaper and more amicable'

Mediation services provide a "quicker, cheaper and more amicable" solution to resolving family disputes, justice minister Jonathan Djanogly has said. He was commenting on family law, mediation and relationships while on a visit to a mediation centre in Ipswich. "Mediation services ... give separating families the opportunity to resolve their differences rather than going straight to court," Mr Djanogly commented. The minister also stressed the importance of children being able to maintain a relationship with both parents after they split up. Many people spend time in court resolving matters, such as securing an extra 30 minutes contact time with children, that "they are better placed to sort out themselves", he added. New rules that came into effect in April mean that anyone contesting the terms of their divorce or separation must first consider mediation. David Norgrove, chair of the independent Family Justice Review Panel, also recommends greater use of mediation in family cases when couples are working out how best to look after children.
