Jeremy Hunt gets behind legacy donation campaign

Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt is lending his support to a new campaign aimed at encouraging people seeking advice on wills and inheritance tax planning to leave money to charity. At the moment, just seven per cent of people leave a donation to charity in the will; a fact the the Legacy10 campaign wants to change. It wants as many people as possible to leave ten per cent of their legacy to charity, which could also allow them to benefit from an inheritance tax break that is being introduced next April. Mr Hunt said that while times are tough, over half the UK population still gives money to charitable causes every month. "What's surprising is that only seven per cent of people ever leave money to a charity in their will," he added. "Including a gift to charity in a will is a great way to recognise an organisation that's been there for you during your life." The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners has said the plans to offer an inheritance tax break to people leaving ten per cent of their estate to charity will "invigorate" the third sector.
