Company prosecuted after worker loses fingers

A company has been prosecuted for safety failings after a worker lost two fingers in the type of incident that can lead to people seeking advice from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.
Arrow Flexible Packaging was fined £3,500 following the incident at its plant in Golborne, Greater Manchester in November of last year.
The worker, Karen Schoelzel, 53, was replacing a rubber insert under a cutting tool when the machine started operating.
She has been unable to return to work after the tool came down on her left hand, severing her entire index finger and her middle finger below the second knuckle.
The company had failed to ensure that suitable guards were in place around these types of machines, an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed.
It also found that it was common for workers to change the rubber on the tool without the mains power to the machine being cut.
HSE inspector Emily Osborne commented: "There should have been suitable guards and safety devices fitted to the machine to make it impossible for employees to gain access to the dangerous cutting tool while it was in operation."
The manufacturing industry remains a source of many workplace accidents, with over 5,000 major injuries reported every year, according to HSE figures.
