Unite calls for powers to curb boardroom pay

The government should give shareholders greater legal powers to curb excessive boardroom pay, one union has claimed.
Unite, which provides trade union support to over two million members, says "pampered" directors are far removed from the everyday struggle of their employees.
The calls are being made as a new survey from Income Data Services reveals directors of FTSE 100 companies had received a 49 per cent pay rise in the last year.
Employees, on the other hand, saw their pay increase below the rate of inflation or even cut, according to Unite.
Len McCluskey, general secretary of the union, described the findings as "an astonishing display of boardroom greed".
He added: "It is exactly why people have been occupying St Paul's to protest against the behaviour of the City elite and a government which is turning a blind eye to these abuses."
Unite is backing the TUC's call for worker representation on company remuneration committees to bring a "sense of reality" to directors' pay.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber described directors' pay as a "brazen stitch-up".
