Property firm fined for asbestos failure

A Cardiff property company has been fined after a self-employed handyman was exposed to asbestos while carrying out work at a client's house.
The worker, who did not wish to be named, regularly worked for Rochefort Shugar and was asked to fix a leaking porch roof at a property in October 2010 when he was exposed to the potentially-deadly material, which sees many people seek help from an asbestosis lawyer every year.
When he removed a sheet of material from the roof, asbestos debris was released into the area.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that while the worker was wearing a dust mask, he did not undergo any decontamination procedures and was not wearing a protective suit.
HSE inspector Steve Richardson said: "There are specific rules and laws regarding hazardous substances like asbestos.
"If we do not enforce these laws, people's health can be put at serious risk. Asbestos is a known carcinogen, and should be treated with extreme caution."
Asbestos is thought to lead to the deaths of around 4,000 people in the UK every year, according to the HSE.
