Animal feed firm fined for workplace injury

An animal feed firm has been fined after a worker lost two fingers when his hand was trapped in machinery.
Dugdale Nutrition Ltd was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after the incident in June 2009.
It comes after 2 Sisters Food Group was fined £230,000 because a worker lost a hand in machinery. Both incidents highlight the kind of situations that can lead to people seeking advice from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.
Dugdale Nutrition was fined £7,000 after an investigation by the HSE revealed safety failings that led to the accident.
The injured worker was attempting to remove a blockage from a chain and flight conveyor when it was switched on by a colleague.
A guard over the machine was not fixed in place and the worker had failed to use the isolator switch to cut the power because it was too high.
"The company broke two health and safety laws by not providing a suitable guard and installing the isolator switch in an out-of-reach position. As a result, a worker has suffered a life-long injury," said HSE inspector Matthew Tinsley.
