Contractor fined after workers exposed to asbestos

A building contractor has been fined after workers were exposed to potentially lethal asbestos fibres during refurbishment work.
Exposure to the substance kills around 4,000 people every year in the UK and can lead to people seeking advice from an asbestosis lawyer.
J C Irvine Limited was prosecuted following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) that revealed the firm was carrying out refurbishment work at a site in Swansea without an asbestos survey.
HSE inspector Hayley Healey noted that construction and maintenance workers are in the most at-risk groups from asbestos-related diseases.
"The widespread occurrence of asbestos as a product in buildings constructed or refurbished prior to 2000, means that inadvertent disturbance of asbestos-containing materials can be frequent and regular where asbestos products have not been adequately identified or managed," she explained.
In addition to asbestosis, people exposed to asbestos can suffer from lung cancer, mesothelioma and pleural plaques.
According to the HSE, a total of 1,320 people in Wales died from mesothelioma between 1982 and 2008.
