Govt report calls for unfair dismissal laws to be scrapped

Workers would be unable to seek unfair dismissal compensation claim advice under new proposals put forward in a government-commissioned report.
It calls for unfair dismissal laws to be scrapped to enable businesses to take on staff without fear of tribunal.
Written by venture capitalist Adrian Beecroft, the report, which was seen by the Daily Telegraph, suggests that many workers "coast along" and underperform because they know their employer is reluctant to sack them.
Instead, Mr Beecroft calls for a Compensated No Fault Dismissal that would allow businesses to sack employees at short notice with just basic redundancy pay.
The proposals have met with strong criticism from unions. TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "Employers already have plenty of powers to make fair dismissals. Giving them the right to act unfairly may go down well on the backbenches, but will horrify employees."
He also claims the measure would do nothing to stimulate growth, an assertion the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) disagrees with.
Over 70 per cent of firms see dismissal rules as burdensome to their business, according to a survey from the organisation.
BCC director general John Longworth said: "A clear new dismissal route will help employers hire with confidence."
