Worker lost hand in 'avoidable accident'

A company has been fined £230,000 after a worker lost his right hand in the type of industrial accident that results in people seeking help from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.
Shaun Alexander, 42, was helping a colleague to clean equipment at the 2 Sisters Food Group's chicken processing plant in Suffolk when his hand was pulled into two rotating cogs and crushed.
It was later revealed that a safety guard had been removed from the machinery.
In a separate incident at the facility, a worker suffered a broken arm when he entered an enclosure to clear a blockage in the system.
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Julie Jarvey said: "Both these incidents were wholly avoidable.
"Shaun Alexander was failed by the company's lack of proper training, inadequate assessment of risks, absence of safe working practices and effective measures stopping access to dangerous equipment."
Food processing plants are dangerous places to work, as evidenced by HSE figures.
Statistics show that the food products and beverages manufacturing sector has a major accident rate 50 per cent higher than the rest of the industry.
