Union slams workplace safety inspection cutbacks

Cutting back on workplace safety visits will lead to more workplace injuries, it is claimed, which may in turn mean more people seek advice from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.

The TUC has slammed new government plans to cap workplace inspections for small companies to just two a year.

Announced by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg yesterday (October 25th), the plans are being seen as the government putting profits before safety.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber argues that regulation is only useful if it can be enforced.

"Cuts in enforcement will put even more of us at risk of damaged health or injury or death in our workplaces," he says.

Mr Barber cites a new survey of small and medium-sized enterprises from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills that shows employment law and health and safety regulation are not major concerns.

"It would appear that employer organisations are pursuing a fanatical right wing agenda that does not actually reflect the concerns of their members," he adds.

The government is looking at ways to reduce workplace safety visits as its main enforcement arm, the Health and Safety Executive, is asked to cut spending by 35 per cent over the lifetime of this parliament.
