Unite hits the road in pensions battle

A "battle bus" will take to the streets of London today (October 24th) as part of Unite's campaign against cuts to public sector pensions.
The vehicle will visit offices across the capital to offer trade union support to members.
It comes as six unions, including Unite, mount a legal challenge on behalf of public sector workers over which inflation index is used by the government to increase their pensions. A judicial review hearing starts in the High Court on Tuesday (October 25th) to challenge the planned switch to the consumer price index (CPI) from the retail price index (RPI).
The RPI is usually higher than the CPI and so any change would effectively mean a cut to workers' pensions.
Meanwhile, the union has also claimed that increasing the state pension age to 66 in 2020 contains "very real financial dangers" for women.
"The government's public sector pension changes will also hit women workers hard as they are the lowest earners and make up the majority of the public service workforce," Unite says.
