Unions 'considering Scots asbestos ruling implications for England'

Unions are looking at how a Supreme Court ruling that sufferers of pleural plaques in Scotland are entitled to compensation will affect England and Wales. They are examining how the judgment will impact sufferers of asbestos-related diseases in the rest the UK, according to the Law Society Gazette. It comes after the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by the Association of British Insurers against a Scottish parliament act that means pleural plaque sufferers can seek compensation. In addition to trade union support services, workers who have come into contact with asbestos can seek advice from an asbestosis lawyer. Commenting on the Supreme Court judgment, Scottish Trades Union Congress deputy general secretary Dave Moxham said: "This is a vindication of the heroic battle by the victims of pleural plaques for fair compensation as well as the work undertaken by MSPs of more than one political party to legislate for justice." The problem, the Law Society Gazette notes, is that the ruling does nothing to enhance the situation of pleural plaque sufferers in England and Wales. Posted by Paul Stevens
