Company fined after worker run over by forklift

A company has been fined after a worker was run over by a forklift truck in the kind of incident that can lead employees to seek advice from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton. Kevin Davey, 61, had both his ankles and lower legs broken when the truck reversed into him in 2010. He has since returned to work, though it was initially feared that his career was ended by the accident. Dorset-based Verplas Ltd was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following the accident. It was ordered to pay a fine of £10,000 after Bournemouth Magistrates' Court told it there was not enough separation of the work area used by pedestrians and forklifts at the firm's premises. HSE inspector Ian Smart said: "The message is that if firms have limited space they still have to organise their operation so that they don't have conflicting activities going on in the same place. Pedestrians and forklift trucks don't mix." In 2009/10, 41 workers suffered a fatal injury involving workplace transport, according to the HSE. Posted by Paul Stevens
