Brewery support workers choose Unite

Workers at a firm that provides services to the brewery industry have voted for trade union support to be provided by Unite. Employees at Staffordshire-based Kammac plc voted overwhelmingly in favour of having Unite as their recognised trade union. Of 65 per cent of the workers who voted, 100 per cent supported the move to be covered by collective bargaining. Unite regional officer Rick Coyle said the company has now agreed to recognise Unite for collective bargaining purposes and to hold discussions on the practical procedures for recognition. "We are glad that the employees have recognised the importance of trade unions as the organisation best able to protect their interests at this very difficult economic time," he added. It comes as Unite ballots members in the higher education sector after workers received what it described as a "derisory" pay offer. If supported, university staff from across the UK could go on strike in November. Posted by Georgina Price
