Unite warns of human toll of austerity measures

Unite, which provides trade union support to thousands of workers around the UK, is warning of the potential human cost of government austerity measures. The union says budget cuts could increase the suicide rate as more people fall into financial hardship and personal insolvency. Parallels, it claims, can be drawn between the UK and what is happening in Greece, which has seen a 40 per cent rise in suicides in the first half of the year. Unite professional officer Dave Munday says economic woes will increase pressures on individuals, as they will be faced with tightening finances, repossessed homes, marital breakdown and lost jobs. "Bearing in mind that 20 per cent of the population will suffer mental problems during their lifetime, this cost-cutting government should not sweep mental health under the carpet because society deems it as an uncomfortable subject," he adds. Unite also warns that changes to the state pension, which will rise to 66 in 2020, could mean women in particular bear the brunt of financial hardship. Posted by Georgina Price
