Campaign launched to boost legacy donations

People across the south and south-west of England are being encouraged to think charitably when they take advice on wills and inheritance tax planning. Somerset Wildlife Trust has launched a campaign to highlight how legacy donations play a vital role in protecting local wildlife and habitats. Sir David Attenborough, vice-president of The Wildlife Trusts, believes the Somerset Wildlife Trust is a deserving cause. "Making a gift to them when you write or update your will is a very special way of ensuring they can continue to do this," he says. Currently, seven per cent of the population remembers a charity in their will, a statistic the government wants to change through inheritance tax breaks. Under the proposals, anyone leaving ten per cent of their estate to a charity will receive a reduction in inheritance tax. Commenting on the move, Keith Johnston from the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners suggested the plans will mean more people leave money to charities. He said: "It's highly likely that this proposal will encourage unprecedented numbers of advisors to bring up the issue of charitable giving with their clients." Posted by Alex McLean
