Union vows to fight job losses at Bombardier, Remploy

Workers at Bombardier can count on trade union support in their efforts to save their jobs, Unite has said. It joined other unions at a parliamentary lobby yesterday (October 12th) to say it will fight to the end to protect the workers' livelihoods. Unite assistant general-secretary Diana Holland said: "We want to make it absolutely clear to the government that Unite is not going away. Our union will keep backing Bombardier's workforce." Thousands more jobs up and down the UK are dependent on the government revisiting the Thameslink contract, she added. It came as Remploy workers descended on parliament to urge MPs to keep their factories running in a bid to save jobs. Unite said the government's consultation on the Sayce report is nothing more than a "smokescreen" to hide the fact it wants to close Remploy's 54 factories, which would put 2,800 employees out of work. The union said: "The government would rather pull the plug and sell off the publicly-funded factories than invest in skilled jobs for disabled workers." Posted by Georgina Price
