Turning the clock forward on personal injuries

Adopting single/double summer time in the UK could mean fewer workers seek a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), moving to a system of GMT+1 in winter and GMT+2 in summer could cut the number of injuries and deaths on the UK's roads.

It argues that lighter nights would save 80 lives and prevent more than 200 serious injuries on the UK's roads each year.

Workers would be among those who could benefit, with the Health and Safety Executive stating that up to a third of all road traffic accidents involve somebody who is at work at the time.

RoSPA is launching a new online poll to assess public opinion, at the same time as a Private Members' Bill on the issue is debated in parliament.

If that bill is passed, the government will carry out a review of moving the clocks forward permanently that could in turn lead to a three-year trial.

RoSPA chief executive Tom Mullarkey said: "Now that darkness is about to descend - and with it an almost inevitable spike in road accidents at twilight - we need to rekindle the debate."
