Hunt warns of litigation as 4G auctions delayed

Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has highlighted the need for commercial dispute resolution as mobile providers argue over the auction of fourth generation (4G) mobile spectrum. Ofcom has decided to delay the sale of frequencies until the end of 2012 following a number of objections to the process. It had been scheduled to take place in the first half of next year. A spokesman for the telecoms regulator said: "We received a number of substantial and strongly argued responses to this consultation. "In light of these responses, and the significance of the decisions that we need to take, we have decided to undertake a further round of consultation on these issues." Vodafone released a statement saying that it agrees with Ofcom's decision to delay the auction of the frequencies, which are being made available by the freeing up of analogue TV channels. The firm said it is "vital" to have the rules straightened out before 4G launches. According to the Independent, Mr Hunt is concerned that litigation and dispute resolution could further delay the auction if companies turn to the courts to get a better deal. Posted by Alex McLean
