Unite ballots biomedical scientists over industrial action

Biomedical scientists could take industrial action with trade union support from Unite after Central Manchester NHS Foundation Trust announced plans that would mean they lose £15,000 a year in wages. The union is now balloting its 36 members at the trust to decide whether to strike over the proposals which could see the hospital's pathology department shut down outside the hours of 09:00 and 17:00. According to Unite, the dispute is the result of changes made in April 2008 for unsocial hours shift work payments which did not include pathology staff. Unite regional officer Keith Hutson said it was "unacceptable" for staff to lose a third of their income because of the "hardline" stance taken by management. "We don't believe that the hospital could function at night with the biomedical scientists who are not union members. In theory and in practice, the hospital could close down," he added. Meanwhile, hundreds of young people backed by Unite will descend on Westminster on Tuesday October 25th to warn MPs that the youth service "will soon become the first public service to fall under the coalition's austerity axe".
