Farmers urged to attend safety events

Farmers across the country are being urged to attend safety events to reduce the number of accidents in the industry.

Offering tips on how employers can reduce the kind of incidents that lead to workers seeking help from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton, the free training sessions will focus on one of the UK's most dangerous industries.

Over the last five years, eight in every 100,000 farmers was killed at work in Great Britain annually, compared to the average figure for workplace deaths of eight in every million.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which is running the events up and down the UK, says the sessions will cover issues such as working at height, machine safety, livestock handling and safe lifting.

HSE inspector Tanya Stewart says it is important farmers do not put their livelihoods at risk with poor safety procedures.

"We'll be offering simple tips that won't cost a lot to put into practice and could even help to boost productivity," she adds.

"It's an alarming statistic that farmers are ten times more likely than most workers to be killed while at work."
