Mediation services hailed for divorcing couples

Mediation services are once again being hailed as an effective means to reduce the stress of separation.

Justice minister Jonathan Djanogly, who has been at the forefront of promoting reforms to family law, mediation and relationships, said separating couples are sorting out their differences quicker and cheaper than before.

It follows the introduction of new rules on April 6th that meant anyone setting out to contest the terms of their separation in court will first be required to consider mediation.

The minister was in Liverpool to meet mediators and divorcing couples to see a mediation assessment meeting in action and discuss the impact of the changes.

He said: "The new rules mean everyone now has the opportunity to see if mediation could be a better solution than going straight to court."

According to the Ministry of Justice, research shows that mediation can cost a quarter of the price and take a quarter of the time of going to court.
