Contractor fined as workers are exposed to asbestos

A contractor has been fined after workers were exposed to dangerous materials that could see them seek help from an asbestosis lawyer. Fadil Adil, of Coniston Road, Bromley, was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for running a construction site that led to workers being exposed to asbestos. Workman employed by the contractor used sledgehammers and hand-operated breakers on asbestos insulating boards in the ceiling of a restaurant that was being demolished. The HSE investigation found that the defendant did not have a licence to work with asbestos and did not carry out an asbestos survey. HSE inspector Ian Seabrook said these types of incidents are "all too familiar". He added: "Anyone working with these sorts of materials has to commission an asbestos survey to ascertain the level of work needed and then have asbestos removed in a controlled manner by a licensed contractor."
